Product News: New help platform 'Webhelp' for Scia Engineer

The usability of any program is given not only by the quality of the software itself, but also by the quality and comprehensiveness of its documentation. Nemetschek Scia has been always focussing on improvements of the help system and manuals for its software solutions. These improvements do not relate just to the contents, but include also implementation of new technologies.

The latest product, Scia Engineer 2008.0 comes with a completely new help platform: "Webhelp". It is a common trend that companies use the Internet for their help systems, knowledge bases, support centres, etc. So, what exactly the Webhelp is?
Simply said, it is a kind of a specialised website storing the complete and up-to-date documentation for Scia Engineer.

So far, when you purchased a program, you received the documentation on the installation CD. However, if any modifications had been made to the documentation later, you could get hold of the modified documentation only in a subsequent update of the program or by downloading from the company website. The Webhelp removes this limitation. Whenever any change is made to the documentation or whenever a new material is completed, the Webhelp is updated instantly and you can immediately get access to the most up-to-date information available.

The Webhelp can be opened in a normal web browser (even though it has been optimised for Internet Explorer).
You can browse the documentation using a table of contents, you can search for the required topic in the Index or you can employ the full text search capability. Moreover, if the browser supports multiple tabs, you can easily open every required topic in a separate window and simply swap between them without having to tediously browse for them every time you want to re-read some piece of information.

This is what the first version of the Webhelp offers. In the future, more features will be added such as extended contents, possibility to give immediate feedback to every page and much more.

Market news: Vinci will build the longest bridge in the world

The French building company "Vinci" has signed a contract of 3 billion dollar to build a bridge of 40 km spanning the Persian Gulf. The construction, composed of two suspended bridges, will join the Emirates of Bahrain and Qatar.

The longest bridge in the world will soon be spanning the Persian Gulf. Vinci and its subsidiary Middle East Dredging Company have signed a contract with the Qatar-Bahrain Causeway Foundation to build a bridge of 40 km to connect the kingdom of Bahrain with the Emirate of Qatar. The contract of three billion dollar
(1.94 million Euros) provides the design and construction of the fixed motorway connection between Bahrain and Qatar. The “bridge of friendship”, which consists of 2x2 roads of 40 km, will connect the two emirates in about thirty minutes. Currently, the motorway connection bypassing the sea through Saudi Arabia takes five hours.

Two rope bridges
18 km of artificial dams and 22 km of bridges and viaducts on the most profound sections will be put on two suspended bridges of 400 meters that enable the transportation. The roadway will constitute of 200 elements of 80 meters each. The construction site, which will start after nine months of research, will take 51 months, so up to 2013. The project of the « bridge of Friendship » wants to stimulate the trade between Qatar and Bahrain. Currently, the longest bridge in the world is situated in the east of China.
It measures 36 km, spans the Hangzhou Bay and connects the cities of Ningo and Jiaxing.

Customer Project: Dutch pavilion Expo 2010 in Shanghai

Architect and Scia Engineer customer: Happy Street - John Körmeling (NL) - www.johnkormeling.nl
Scia Engineer customer: ABT (NL)www.abt.eu

From 1st May up to and including 31st October 2010, the world exhibition “Expo 2010 Shanghai, China” will be held,
with the official theme being:"Better City, Better Life". The theme focuses on a new way of thinking, new technologies and new practices to realize a healthy and sustainable urban life.

After a contest, the design John Körmeling was selected. His concept Happy Street is a strong three-dimensional ideal picture that draws the attention in a simple and renewing way to the quality of life of people who live in the city. It also offers a perspective for the future. The project consists of a route in a construction comparable to a roller coaster, to which houses are suspended. It can still be edited and modelled in different ways, parts and aspects. The message in this shape shows the modernity, creativity and modernization.

The first constructive design for the pavilion was made by Mr. Rijk Blok of Happy Street BV. The constructive, structural and installation development takes place in close cooperation with ABT. In China the translation to Chinese building plans will be executed by the Design and Research Institute of the Tongji University in Shanghai.

ABT told us that Happy Street is very complex on engineering level. Only columns will bear the pavilion, there will be no shear walls. The hanging and wide outstanding houses provide many eccentric loads. Earthquakes, not unknown in this part of China, are a completely different risk. Apart from this un-Dutch load, the construction, on which millions of visitors will be walking, may not shake tangibly.

In May the final design has to be finished. The execution will start by the end of 2008. The 20 million Euros for the construction, design and development have been raised by the Dutch government and the industry. ‘Shanghai’ is already the third Expo pavilion for ABT. Before the consultancy office was involved in the design of the Dutch pavilions in Sevilla (1992) and Hannover (2000)

Tips & Tricks: Revision management in Allplan 2008

Revision management is very important in a CAD environment.
Of course you can simply mention the revision on the stamp / header space manually, but there are also other possibilities.
One of these possibilities is using the properties that every drawing has.

In the plan manager you ask for the corresponding properties by clicking the right mouse button. (image 1)

image 1 image 2 image 3 image 4

On the third tab you register the creation date, the date of approval and all intervening modification moments.
For every modification moment - or revision - you register the date, the person in charge and a short remark (or description).

Subsequently, these data can be recovered in different ways.

Within Allplan ProjectPilot you have the possibility to generate various reports.
One of these reports reproduces all registered modification information. (image 2 and image 3)

It is also possible to represent these modifications on your plans. The attributes are visualized on the drawing by means of a variable text view. In the table below you see the required attributes.

CREATE
MODIFY
APPROVE
Administration / Created
Administration / Edited on: (index 1-y)
Administration / Edited on: (index z)
Plan Manager / Created by
Administration / Layout by (index 1-y)
Administration / Layout by (index z)
[remark = plain text]
Plan Manager / Remark on changes (index 1-y)
Plan Manager / Remark on changes (index z)

You simple create a new variable text view with the required attributes and other elements (text, lines, hatching, fillings, …). Save the whole in desk / project / private under file 8 and under a random name.
The file number is very important since Allplan only accepts captions from this file (n°8) on the drawing level.

To show this caption, you have to use the drawing layout of the drawing frame you are going to attach this new caption to. Is the drawing frame not available by default, you define additional frames yourself through the plan layout configuration. (image 4)

Of course, this caption doesn’t have to be completely unrelated to all other drawing information.
The modification attributes can be integrated perfectly in one global caption – e.g. the stamp/header/footer itself – as you can see in the following example. (image 5)
