SCIA Corporate News: New strategic agreements for SCIA

A cornerstone of the SCIA business strategy consists in strategic co-operations.
In April 2005 SCIA has underwritten two new major agreements with partners: one with CADS U.K. – CADS Software India and one with GeoDelft.

Through CADS UK, SCIA is operating successfully in the United Kingdom; more than 100 clients are using our CAE software for designing concrete and steel structures. The cooperation is extended to bundle forces in creating an industry standard CAE solution based on the SCIA.ESA PT platform, by integrating CADS design know-how.

With its sister company CADS Software India (CSI), SCIA has entered an agreement for setting up a SCIA development team in Chennai. Also CSI will distribute the SCIA product family SCIA.ESA PT platform on the Indian market though its offices in Chennai, Mumbai and Delhi. Ian Chambers, director of CADS UK and CSI expressed: “CADS and SCIA are well placed to address together the high potential market in India”.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed between Geodelft (Netherlands) and the SCIA management. Both organisations are intensifying the cooperation, as well for developing new Geo-structural Engineering software as for international distribution. Mr. J. Wentink, director of GeoDelft, commented: “the exchange of mutual know-how and competences in geo-structural engineering leads to a strong synergy and enduring success for both BeNeLux-based organisations”.

Both co-operations are reinforcing the product offer as well as the international expansion.

   ESA-Concrete Section

ESA-Concrete Section is a stand-alone program, on the market since 2003. The program checks any reinforced concrete cross-section for its response and capacity. In the last two years it has proven itself to 200 and more customers, all of them are very satisfied with its user-friendliness and graphical charm.

The program allows the user to pick the desired cross-section out of a set of cross-sections or he has the possibility to draw a cross-section himself (composite: concrete/concrete or not). Then the user installs the reinforcement and stirrups and the operating internal forces ( N, Vz, My and Mz) are entered.
Afterwards the program checks the response of the cross-section. The results are presented graphically in 2D or 3D. If necessary the user can calculate the capacity of the cross-section for up to five different extremes ( Nu, Mu, Muy, Muz, NuMu ).

The results are presented in a nice graphical document with all the pictures (what you see is what you get).

The program is based on ESA-Prima Win and comes with the demo CD of ESA-Prima Win. The on-line manual contains a set of examples based on DIN 1045-1, EC2, ONORM, and more.

SCIA offers transparency during its ‘Initiation Days’ for design and engineering software

Today, choosing software is not easy considering the diversity of the offer. Beyond all doubt, software tools bring a significant competitive advantage to the design and engineering field thanks to the functionalities and the user-friendliness of the user interfaces. Moreover, companies are often already equipped and must really be convinced of the added value of new software before acquiring it in order to replace older programs.

As an innovating software company, we wish to go further than just giving a simple "demonstration" during meetings with possible partners. We have decided to go for transparency by giving the opportunity to potential buyers to test the suggested solutions, thus allowing them to make a decision based on much more than a range of beautiful images and a beautiful speech.

Since the end of 2004, SCIA regularly organizes ‘Initiation Days’ for its design software (Allplan Architecture & Allplan Engineering) and for its stability calculation software (Esa-Prima Win and the new SCIA.ESA PT).

What are these ‘Initiation Days’ about?

We address architects, designers or engineers who wish to evaluate one of our software solutions. During one day, SCIA puts a computer, software and competent instructors at their disposal, at no charge at all. The participants become immediately familiar with the principal commands of the program through a series of directed exercises. The instructors answer all their questions. The number of participants is limited in order to guarantee good interactivity with the instructors. And last but not least, at the end of the day, they are given a test version of the complete program, free of charge for 1 month. Anyone interested profits in this way of active SCIA support. Please note that these initiation days do not replace a training, which is essential for attaining a good working knowledge of the software.

Some testimonies of participants

Mr. Francis Achenne – Crea Haus Construction: "This day presented us a closer acquaintance with the software and an outline of the functionalities. This day is the ideal complement of a descriptive booklet, which can give only one dimension of the calculation programme. The usual demonstrations are always too fast and often show you only the strong points of the software."

Mr. Axel Delferiere, independent engineer: "In one day a whole range of aspects was approached. This initiative appears much more constructive and interesting than a traditional demonstration. A very good initiative for achieving a realistic image of the software"

You, or one of your employees, want to participate in this innovating experiment?

Steel footbridge for the European Parliament

SCIA Customer: Ingénieurs Associés in Belgium.
Contact: M Thierry Gerard
Winner in the ‘User Contest 2005’, category 4: Steel Constructions

Short presentation:
The goal of this steel footbridge is to make a communication between several buildings of the European Parliament in Brussels.

The footbridge is built in a circle of 73m in diameter. It is perfectly symmetric related to the axe. Its surface is 900 m². Its floor level is situated at a height of 10m above the cover plate of the SNCB Station, called «Mail». The footbridge is based on 8 steel columns, 4 of them are the prolongation of existing columns.

In spite of its big dimensions, the footbridge has no dilatation joint. It has yet to sustain very important dilatations and big vertical and horizontal wind forces. Horizontal forces are intercepted by fastenings to the buildings located at the end of the footbridge. Those fastenings have been designed to allow the dilatation of the structure while taking the horizontal forces thanks to slipping supports in Teflon and mechanical stop units.

The steel structure of the footbridge weights 280 ton, the steel quality is AE355JRG2.
ESA-Prima Win Software has been used
.

Mr. Thiery Gerald of 'Ingenieurs' Associated says:

"Due to its geometry, this footbridge is an extremely flexible construction. We were thus confronted with significant problems of ‘eigen frequency’ vibration. The module for frequency calculation, allowed us to easily identify the positions of the structure which posed problems. The footbridge, in spite of its big length, does not comprise dilation joints; as a consequence it is subject to significant thermal dilations. Thanks to the software, we were able to determine these dilations and thus gauge very precisely the position of the mechanical stop units and slipping supports.

The application on the structure of dissymmetrical load combinations on the two wings of the footbridge made it possible to identify and solve significant problems of torsion.

The flexibility and the user-friendliness of Esa-Prima Win software made it possible to adapt quickly and easily the complicated geometry during the study phase by the architects and the owner of the building."

Tips & Tricks: Saving selections into a database

In SCIA.ESA PT, it is possible to save a selection into a database. This makes it easy to recall the selection later on without having to manually select all the entities again.

First of all, it is needed to make a selection. Next, this selection can be saved using the option Save selection into database

In this dialog box, it is possible to adapt the selection, to add comments and to even add a picture for easy reference.

To load a selection later on, the option Load selection from database   is used. Both buttons can be found in the Selection of object toolbar.
