Lustrum of the ESA Prima-Win User Association (NL)

The ESA Prima-Win User Association in the Netherlands recently celebrated its first lustrum!

The preliminary meeting, attended by approximately 30 participants, took place on 24th November 1998 in an office of the Rotterdam Public Works Department. After the 2nd general meeting in the following February, the notary could execute the memorandum of association and the association became effective as of 11th March 1999.

During the 12th general meeting of last 4th March, the first lustrum was celebrated with a lustrum cake. From the very first moment, the association, which now has approximately 50 members, constantly has been on the up-and-up. The management and the members deployed miscellaneous activities in the past 5 years.

Apart from organizing workshops and trainings regarding specific ESA Prima-Win features, they keep SCIA informed about the members’ wishes. In turn, SCIA indicates when and how specific wishes are implemented in the program. The release of the SCIA.ESA PT Frame Module, the next generation of calculation software, proves that SCIA is effectively fulfilling the members’ wishes.

Because of the metonymy, the ESA Prima-Win User Association has updated its name to change it into ESA User Association. Visit our website www.scia-online.com/gebruikersvereniging and convince yourself that an on-line member registration is an asset for all users!

Reinforced Concrete in SCIA.ESA PT

Calculation of reinforcement

Reinforced Concrete Beams & Columns Analysis and Reinforced Concrete Plates & Walls Analysis are the SCIA.ESA PT modules for the calculation of reinforcement. The program is completely integrated with the SCIA.ESA PT modules of structural analysis.
With these modules the structural engineer has an interactive graphical tool at his disposal for the calculation of the statically required reinforcement amount according to the regulations given in the national codes (EC2, NEN6720, CSN, DIN1045, ÖnormB4700, BS8110).

Working with the modules

The design and check of the construction is done in the graphical environment of SCIA.ESA PT. The elements to check are selected graphically with the mouse pointer. Specific concrete data are properties of an element and can be copied to other elements. Using special SCIA.ESA functions like filter-selection makes modifying the properties easy.

The input of concrete cover and reinforcement bars is done in a clear dialogue window.

Concrete Setup

All important factors and coefficients are proposed by the program and are editable by the user.

Output

After the calculation, the required longitudinal reinforcement and shear reinforcement can be represented graphically on the 3D view of the structure. A numerical preview can be shown at the same time. All items can be inserted into the document and can be adapted to the users wish. The document is active which means that some values can be changed in the document. The model will automatically adjust to this change.

Also a crack control for the selected serviceability limit states combinations based on the required theoretical reinforcement can be carried out.

For 1D elements a Physical Non-Linear (PNL) deformation calculation can be carried out for theoretical reinforcement as well as practical reinforcement. For 2D elements the user has the possibility to increase the theoretical reinforcement before running the PNL deformation calculation.

For 1D elements the user has the option to checks the response or the capacity for the provided practical reinforcement. In SCIA.ESA PT it is possible to view and document the results in many ways:

  • More result components in one view;
  • Highlighting values below/above certain limits;
  • Section, member, local or global extremes;
  • Isobands, isolines (with labels), sections, user isolines.

The Market: the building industry in the Czech Republic

Since the entry of the Czech Republic into the EC in May 2004, the Czech building industry has shown an extraordinary flexibility to adapt to the market conditions; as a consequence, it nowadays is a sound business.

It has quickly anticipated on the stringent European requirements with regard to quality, speed and innovation. The building industry and its material-producing sidelines are an entirely denationalised sector with its proper internal resources, which can benefit from participations from the first EC member states as well. The Czech building industry entered into the EC market after several successful years. With an expansion of 8.9% in 2003, this industry is amongst the most dynamic of the country and highly contributes to the nation’s wealth and prosperity.
For 2004, another 6% expansion is forecasted, considering the miscellaneous projects for new infrastructures being currently in the pipeline, which are moreover financially supported by foreign investors.

Keeping these developments in mind and out of its thorough knowledge of this market, SCIA organises next 11th and 12th November a trip to the Czech Republic for the Benelux manager. During this trip, they will be able to meet their Czech peers and discover new business opportunities.

EDIBO builds a "Cathedral of steel" for TCI Coek

Early May 2004, the Coek Group started the construction of the new production hall "TCI III" at Geel.

This investment enables the engineering company building its titanium-clad reactors even bigger than before.
In the production hall, a lifting capacity of 500 tons (rolling bridge of twice 250 tons) is provided! In this way, the Coek Group can build reactors with a diameter upwards of 10.5 meter and a unit weight of up to 500 tons. As of now, columns up to 80 m long with a maximum weight of 1000 tons can be built as well.
This combination, which is unique in the Benelux, will be operational by the end of September 2004.

The best way to describe the hall is “a cathedral of steel”. This 22-m high and 120-m long construction with a 30m span will be realised by the Lommel company EDIBO. To compute the stability of this unrivalled dashing exploit, the engineers fortunately can revert to their experience, their know-how and … software from SCIA.

Edibo will use an overall amount of some 850 tons of steel to build a 4,800m² surface. In the structure, two rolling bridges with a 27m wide span and lifting height of 16,5 meters will be installed. Because of the wall height and the heavy rolling bridges, 47 compound columns will be used. For each compound column, weighing 7 tons, four ready-made concrete piles will be driven into the soil, up to a depth of 13 meters. Each pile foundation will have a reinforced concrete cap to distribute the forces over the piles. The new hall will be connected to the existing premises through the nave. To this end, the wall must be provided with a 10m wide and 8m high hole. In order to absorb the forces here, quadruple lattice columns of 15 tons each will be realised in “3D” to the left and to the right of this hole. At full load, these columns will have to absorb loads of up to 500 tons.

We sincerely congratulate the company with this extraordinary masterpiece.

Tips&Tricks: the Property window in SCIA.ESA PT

When viewing the results of the calculation process, most of the time it is needed to select different members, for example, first you want to check the internal forces of the beams, then you want to check the internal forces of the columns. A possible way of doing this is by closing the Results menu, selecting the members needed and re-opening the Results menu. It is obvious that this way of working is quite time consuming.

An easier procedure is the following:

Open the Results menu by clicking on Results in the Main window:

The Properties window now shows the Results menu. Next, select one of the members for which you would like to see the results. Normally, after you’ve made a selection, the Properties window shows the properties of the selected member(s), but now, the Results menu is still being shown.

To switch between the Member properties and the Results menu, use the pull-down menu:

In the Member properties menu, the wanted members can be easily selected using the Select Members by Property button:

This way, the members can for example be selected by Type or Cross Section.

After this selection, the program will automatically switch back to the Results menu where the results can be viewed. This method avoids the unnecessary closing and re-opening of the Results menu and thus provides a quicker way to access the results of the preferred members.
