SCIA Corporate News: The India Challenge for SCIA

Since July 2005 SCIA has installed a team of 6 programmers at Chennai, at the premises of CSI (Cads Software India). The first priority is to localize the SCIA.ESA PT product for India, by incorporating the Indian code in the design modules. Also a link with the CADS software for concrete has to be realized.

India is following the example of China when it comes to economical growth. If China is becoming the factory of the world, India will be the leader in services. Today India has over 2,5 million young professionals, of which more than 50% have an education in engineering or life sciences. Tech services grow over 30% yearly; over 200.000 engineers graduated this year. The revenues in software and services are over 22 billion $.

Yet many problems have to be overcome: 63% of the population is illiterate, 20% of the population is ultra-poor (living on less than 1 $ a day), there is a massive shortage of energy (lacking power plants). A major effort in construction has started; currently over 5000 km of highways are being built.

SCIA will soon start a road show in the major cities of India. Together with CSI, the SCIA engineering software will be presented to the vast engineering community. SCIA is hoping to assist the Indian Engineering offices with their services offered as well locally as to the international construction market.

New mobile load analysis in SCIA.ESA PT 5.2

Two modules are available for mobile load analysis, esas.02 - mobile loads on frames and surfaces and esas.03 - advanced mobile loads on frames and surfaces.

These two modules offer a state-of-the-art solution for the calculation of structures subjected to mobile loads (bridge design, crane tracks, etc.).
These modules cover the complete design process used in the present bridge engineering standards, including a great variety of user-defined load systems, envelope results, results in selected points, etc.

The module generates influence lines / areas for a mobile load that move along a given track. The direction and intensity of the moving unit load can be altered. Further, defined load-systems can be positioned on the calculated influence lines. Critical positions are then found for these systems. This is known as the utilisation of influence lines. It is possible to automatically calculate the envelope of the most unfavourable effects. Various types of load-systems allow for wider calculation possibilities.

The first step in the “mobile load analysis” is the definition of the track along which the mobile load moves. The track is defined graphically.

In the second step the load system has to be defined. Some additional options can be defined:

  • a limited running length on the track,
  • input of a multiplication coefficient for the results and for all results except deformations respectively (impact coefficient).

The envelope results are stored in a series of load cases containing the maximum and minimum values of the components of the internal forces and displacements.

The envelope result can be combined with other load cases to find the final extreme forces and displacements. These combinations are used for reinforcement design or for stress and stability check of steel structures.

Construction: the Eastern European countries elevate the European market

In the second quarter of 2005, production in the construction sector increased by 1,6 % in the euro zone and by 1,7 % in the European Union (UE-25), compared to the first quarter of 2005. The Eastern European countries primarily caused these quarterly rises.

Over one year, the production of the construction industry in the whole European Union increased by 0,4 %, according to the official figures as published by the European Office of Statistics, Eurostat.
On the other hand, if it progressed in the second quarter in the euro zone, it will decrease by 0,3% if a whole year is considered.

In detail, the biggest quarterly rises were obtained in the Eastern Bloc countries: +10,5% in Estonia; +9,1% in Slovenia and +8,2% in Poland. In comparison, always over the same period, France has recorded a progression of only 0,4% (+0,5 % for the building and +0,3% for the civil engineering). Nevertheless, only in Portugal was recorded a decrease (-0,6%).

The building sector increased by 1,3% in the euro zone and by 1,7% in the entire European Union. As for the sector of civil engineering, a rise of 1,9 % in the euro zone and 0,4% in the UE-25 zone has been registered.

Two Swiss SCIA customers have won prestigious prices for steel constructions

Two prominent Swiss steel constructors, both dedicated SCIA software users, have recently distinguished themselves by winning some prestigious prices. It regards the steel company Zwahlen & Mayr that was honoured for the museum "Paul Klee Centre" with the Swiss price for steel structures "Prix Acier 2005", and the second company is Mauchle, that received the ‘European Price for Steel Structures 2005’ with the office building "La Ferriera".

Swiss Steel Structure Price " Prix Acier 2005 " - Zwahlen & Mayr SA

The Swiss Steel Structure Price is granted every two years for outstanding buildings, in which steel is used as a means of architectural expression. Goal is the promotion of Swiss steel structure competence and the sensitisation of technical potential and architectural expression strength of steel structures.

After evaluation by a specialized jury, four projects were nominated for the Swiss steel structure price "Prix Acier 2005". One of the nominees was the ‚Paul Klee Centre’ in Bern (CH).

Owner: Maurice E. and Martha Mueller Foundation, Bern
Architect: Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Paris
Steel structure: Zwahlen & Mayr SA, Aigle

The ‚Paul Klee centre’ in Bern is a real work of art - a tribute, both to the poetic ease of the paintings of Paul Klee and to the hill chains of the Pre-Alps of Bern. The idea of the architect, Mr. Renzo Piano, was to build an extension to the landscape. It really looks as if the building is rising out of the meadow. For the three-way wave were needed 1'200 tons of steel and 40 km of hand-welded seams: an extraordinary achievement of professional competence in the steel construction business. The complex but at the same time clearly readable stylistic form finds its correspondence in the construction, which points out the potential of steel structures for individual and complex frames with large spans. Under the enormous arches is situated the area for active observation of art.

European Steel Structure Price - Mauchle Metallbau

The business premises "La Ferriera" in Locarno of architect Livio Vacchini has been distinguished with the ‘European Steel Structure Price 2005’. Every two years, the European convention for steel structure ECS awards per country a price for an outstanding building in steel.

The decisive criterion for choosing "La Ferriera" is the use of steel in an urban context and the representative design of a multi-storey office and business building, which is one of a kind. The project shows an unusual and sophisticated kind of steel use, it really energizes architects and engineers of walking new paths together.

Owner: Swiss Life, Zurich
Architecture: Livio Vacchini, Locarno
Steel structure: Mauchle Metallbau, Sursee

“La Ferriera“ is an office building of six storeys high in the historical city centre of Locarno, it was designed by the architect's office of Livio Vacchini.
The building was finished in 2003 and is the conversion of a radical architectural idea. Concerning urban development, the building construction has taken into account the block-like architecture of the historical centre. At the inside of the building, a light passage is constructed at ceiling level, in this way the ground floor of the block is available for public pedestrian traffic.
The use of visible steel for the bearing structure of the façade is unusual. The floors of the office space are constructed with steel connections, which are connected to the steel facade. The outer bearing structure is a real design element and at the same time it’s a statement in town construction. Bearing and non-bearing steel façade elements form a homogeneous front; they give an unusual effect of solidity to the building. The building makes a lasting contribution to the development of architecture by its strong architectural manifesto.

Tips & Tricks: Insert an item into a Library in SCIA.ESA PT 5.2

The latest version, SCIA.ESA PT 5.2 allows the user to insert an item within a library. This makes it possible to insert for example a new load case within the load Cases Manager instead of adding the load case to the bottom of the list.

First of all, open a library, e.g. the Load Cases Manager.

Next, highlight a load case and press the Insert button .

A new load case is inserted before the highlighted one and not added at the bottom of the list. The name of this load case can now be modified at the user’s preference.

This new option is available in all manager windows: Materials, Cross-Sections, Load Cases, Combinations, and Buckling Data…

It allows for an easy addition of items on the desired position without having to manually changing all items that are already saved in the database.
