Nemetschek Scia has released a new Edition of its flagship product Scia Engineer intended for BIM modelling professionals. With this edition an engineer or draftsman is able to model and detail any 3D structure, be it a building, a roof, a staircase, an industrial plant, a bridge, a tunnel or an arbitrary composition of solids, 2D and 1D elements.
All parametric functionality is available enabling to create company specific templates or structural libraries. Modelling and detailing in 3D is the primary focus. The engineering structural documentation with drawings and quantities is worked out with this edition. General arrangement drawings and details are extracted from the model. The model data can be sent to another Edition of Scia Engineer (Concept, Professional or Expert) to perform the analysis and design part. In this way teamwork in a design office is stimulated, joining modelling professionals with design engineers, creating the bridge between CAE and CAD in an efficient and inexpensive way.
The high interoperability features allow importing external model information, e.g. an HVAC installation, piping, or other non-structural information. With collision checking and easy visualisation tools this edition leads to significant productivity gains. In a multidisciplinary design office, tasks related to structural modelling will be executed with this edition. Aligning and transforming architectural elements to structural building parts (e.g. walls, slabs, stairs, foundations,…) are examples of this feature. Interoperability with other software products such as Allplan, ArchiCAD, Revit, Tekla Structures and Vectorworks is managed with this edition.

Loading of structures is a time-consuming task. Scia Engineer offers numerous tools to streamline it. One of the most effective means is a Load panel.
Scia Engineer defines Load panels as auxiliary entities with the sole purpose to distribute loads to structural elements of the model.
Prior versions already defined some sets of load panels dedicated to special cases.
The generic load panels were introduced in Scia Engineer 2010. Until that version, we had the Load to panel nodes, Load to panel edges and Load to panel opening edges. Furthermore, there was also the Load to beams.
In 2010.1, a new load panel type is developed: load panel to edges/beams. This brand new panel type allows the user to load also the internal beams and edges (e.g. at the location of a wall). In previous versions, only beams at the edges were loaded. With this option each type of surface load, on a 2D member or free load, can be generated to line loads.
Another new functionality of the load panels is the FEM Method. In version 2010.1, there are two methods for transfer in the case of the Load to panel beams and edges:
- Standard method, this is based on the total load on the load panel and the total projected length of the loaded members, with a uniform generated load on the length
- FEM method: is an alternative method that approaches reality even more
With regard to this accurate FEM method, the panel will be calculated as an orthotropic plate which results in a still more correct load distribution. |
