For most of you, the holidays have come to an end. Also the SCIA-employees have taken some time off to get charged up again. In July and August you had to do without any SCIA eNews. This September edition will make it up for it. We present you an eNews filled with interesting information related to the construction world and news on SCIA’s planned activities.
We greatly appreciate your opinion, comments and suggestions on this eNews and wish you a lot of reading pleasure.

In the September 2004 edition, we have chosen the following topics for you:

    SCIA Software Conferences: overwhelming success

SCIA Software Conferences: Overwhelming success

The SCIA software conferences of May-June attracted more than 300 companies, an overwhelming success.
Quotes noted during the presentations: "the production process in the precast industry goes for robots", "3D modelling of reinforced concrete structures saves 30% in design cost", "if security is a real issue, the building sites need engineers, not architects", "a structure is like a human body: keep it flexible instead of rigid", "25% of all bridges need serious repair".

Following the collapse of part of the Paris airport Charles-de-Gaulle, SCIA was invited to appear on Belgian TV and Radio. It was stated that for preventing more accidents with current architectural buildings, more engineering studies are needed whilst applying the latest technology in structural analysis including collapse simulations.

During the second half of 2004 SCIA will be very active on the market to introduce new software applications based on the S-BIM (Structural Building Information Modelling) technology. You are kindly invited to read the 'white paper' (in PDF), which is published on the SCIA website.

Overview Drawings in SCIA.ESA PT

SCIA.ESA PT is equipped with tools for a fast production of steel overview drawings. It generates pictures of sections or views given by a set of planes, which are defined by a 3D-line grid. The way of displaying labels and dimension lines in the individual planes is adjustable.

The overview drawing wizard automatically generates the views for the individual planes. The line grid, including the dimension lines, is displayed in each selected section plane. The pictures generated by this wizard are saved in the picture database, which is called ESA gallery. By clicking any item in the picture list, the user gets an immediate preview, and can edit properties such as scale, name, commentary or display mode.

Any picture can be modified using an internal graphical editor. The user can add dimension lines, texts or normal graphic shapes, as well as edit line thickness, style and colour. The layer manager allows the user to switch selected parts of the picture into a hidden or frozen mode. For displaying a part of the structure, 3D-clipping and picture border setting are available.

The pictures are placed on drawing paper by using the so-called 'paper space' editor and are stored in the paper space gallery.
The graphic environment of the paper space editor enables fast preparation of stamps including inserted logos, automatic texts, frames etc. As well as all other SCIA.ESA PT outputs, the paper space editor is based on templates, which can be created by the user. Any drawing can be saved as a template, which can be loaded automatically when creating a new paper. Together with the usage of 'automatic texts' (like project name, author, date, time etc.,) this is a very efficient way to produce a high number of automatic drawings.
All the pictures inserted into the drawing layout maintain their 3D information, thus enabling additional modification of properties like scale, rendering, hidden line mode, view direction etc...

Hot Item: S-BIM, a concept that becomes reality

The high-tech industry is fond of acronyms that often hide concepts deserving to be explained. This goes certainly for S-BIM, standing for : «Structural Building Information Modelling».

S-BIM is a platform for intelligent 3D modelling of building structures. Modelling concerns the geometry, the design, the details, the construction particularities and more: it ensures a considerable saving of time and a drastic reduction of errors thanks to integration and major coordination of the elements constituting the structural project.

S-BIM is a whole of modelling tools with mutual connections for structures. These modelling tools are e.g. : a drawing tool, a calculation tool, a fabrication tool but also concern project databases, databases of components of the structure, etc. The interconnection between these tools is essential to save valuable time and to increase the reliability and the consistency of the constructions.

In fact, S-BIM drastically simplifies the complexity of a construction project by automatically channelling an important volume of information between the multiple actors of the project.

Realising the S-BIM concept has been a priority for SCIA for several years now. Its software tools, such as SCIA.ESA PT, ALLPLAN and Steel CIM, already offer an unequalled level of integration.

If this subject interests you, please read our White Paper explaining in detail the concept of S-BIM and its present status.

New SCIA International User Contest 2005

Your nicest projects should be seen … and rewarded! SCIA makes it possible by organising the User Contest 2005. Present your project to an international public and win marvelous prices!

This user contest – our 4th edition already – offers you a unique opportunity to come forward with your company and to get an international platform. All submitted projects are published in the SCIA User Contest Book, together with your company profile (5000 copies will be printed). Of all winning companies, a comprehensive case study will be made. During the prize-giving ceremony this will be presented by SCIA to the international press and media.

We also like to personally reward you for your contribution. Perhaps you have been dreaming for a long time of a city trip to Athens or Venice … or would you like to treat yourself to a Pocket PC with navigation system, a camcorder or a home cinema system? For the laureate in each of the 4 categories (Projects ALLPLAN, Civil Engineering, Commercial / Industrial buildings and Steelconstructions) of this contest, SCIA will fulfill one of these dreams

Participating is simple
. This contest is meant for projects which have either been realised already, or are still in progress, or will shortly be carried out. They have to be realised with Allplan Architecture, Allplan Engineering, ESA-Prima Win or SCIA.ESA PT. You have already elaborated the project, so the biggest job is already done. Now you only have to submit your projects to us…

Surf to the SCIA User Contest 2005 website

Tips & Tricks: The use of templates in SCIA.ESA PT

Do we have to specify our settings all over for each new project?
Not any longer in SCIA.ESA PT!

Your choice with regard to codes, material and functionalities can be saved as a template. When you start up another project, SCIA.ESA PT brings along all this information, these settings need not be entered again.

Steps to be followed:

Step 1: Make your choice of project data. Now the entire project environment, materials and sections in the library, can be initialized.

Step 2: Save as template.
You have the possibility to give your own name and description. With “load image” you can use an existing icon of 32x32bit, create one of your own or modify it.

Step 3: The next time you start a new project you can call up your created template under the tab “user templates”.
This template contains all your settings, icon, environment, functionalities and sections.
